U.S. State Department Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs Amos Hochstein visited Mongolia April 27 – 28 to hold talks on U.S.-Mongolia cooperation on energy issues.  In separate meetings with the ministers of Mining, Industry, Environment, and Energy, Special Envoy Hochstein lauded efforts by the Mongolian government to improve the legal framework for the energy sector. Noting the technical help that his bureau has already provided to revamp the Petroleum Law and now the implementing regulations, he offered to expand that assistance to include renewable energy.

At a luncheon co-hosted by AmCham (U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Mongolia), Special Envoy Hochstein described the vast changes that have taken place in global energy markets over the last ten years, particularly pointing out that investors need “clear rules of the game” to give them the confidence to commit their capital and that it is becoming increasingly important for nations to effectively integrate renewables into their energy mix.
